French Bulldogs are used mostly as pets and yet they make wonderful watchdogs. This AKC Non-Sporting breed is a clown by nature due to its remarkable appearance and merry personality. The breed has close links to the English Bulldog, a superior fighting dog that underwent many changes in the course of history and is now a mellow companion.
It is argued still whether the French Bulldog is solely a smaller version of its English counterpart and was developed in England and later came to France. Some people are inclined to think that though the French Bulldog is the relative of the English Bulldog, it was developed in France and introduced later to Great Britain. Whatever the case may be, the French Bulldog is one of the most exciting pets to own.
French Bulldogs - Characteristics
French Bulldogs are small muscular dogs with erect bat ears, which are one of the most prominent physical attributes. They have a very large head in proportion to the body. The head is flat between the ears (like in the English Bulldog), but is slightly domed as it goes down to the nose. The French Bulldog has a wide chest and reaches about 11-12 inches at the shoulder. The average height is about 28 lbs.
French Bulldogs have a short coat, which lies close to the body. Although, the coat does not need much grooming, the wrinkles on the face should be regularly cleaned with a soft cloth. The breed comes in many color patterns, yet solid black, mouse, liver, and some others are undesirable. This is a low maintenance dog, as it does not need much exercise. French Bulldogs are recommended for indoor living.
