According to the AKC standard, the hounds should have a muscular body with heavy bone. Bitches should be judged on the same grounds as the male hounds as there are practically no differences between the sexes. Hounds weighing more than 28 pounds should be disqualified from the show ring.

The club dedicated to the breed was organized in 1897 after a judge picked the hound as the best in the breed. The next year, a breed standard was adopted that described an ideal representative of the breed. It should be said that the breed has not changed much since that time.
