French Bulldogs had ups and downs along their history and were rather popular in the United States some time ago. The interest in the breed dropped a few years ago, yet the popularity of the breed seems to come back as shown by the number of registered litters per year. Nowadays, the French Bulldog is a well-established companion dog that is easily recognized by the bat ears and a big head.

Quite a number of clubs and associations take interest in the breed and have the welfare of the breed as the main foundation aim. The French Bulldog Club of America was the first breed club in the world. It was founded in 1897 after a judge picked a French Bulldog as the best in breed. The next year, a breed standard was adopted that described an ideal representative of the breed. It should be said that the French Bulldog has not changed much since that time.
According to the AKC standard, French Bulldogs should have a muscular body with heavy bone. Bitches should be judged on the same grounds as the male dogs as there are practically no differences between the sexes. Dogs weighing more than 28 pounds should be disqualified from the show ring. Bat ears, a feature so loved in French Bulldogs, is a must.
