French Bulldogs - History

Though it is still argued regarding where the French Bulldogs originated, it is evident that the breed had the English Bulldog as the ancestor. In the 19th century, the English Bulldog was a popular companion for Englishmen and is still a symbol of Great Britain. Some dogs were smaller than others and were especially liked by seamen who took them along when traveling to France for work opportunities. This is the explanation for how the French Bulldog appeared on the continent.

The way to the hearts of the French was not really difficult as the dog with erect ears and a clownish appearance was fun to play with. The dogs were merry and alert. They were like a magnet for French ladies who used them as lap dogs and adopted them as pets. In fact, the French Bulldog became very popular in France and then traveled back to Great Britain and started to be distributed around the world.

French Bulldogs - In the United States

In the United States, the French Bulldog appeared in 1896 at the Westminster Kennel Club's show. The first breed club was established a year later. It should be said that American breeders managed to preserve the characteristics of the French Bulldog as they did not encourage a European tendency for rose ears.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the French Bulldog became extremely popular, yet its popularity vanished with time. Once a funny clown and affectionate companion, the French Bulldog was replaced by some other fashionable breeds. However, nowadays there is a tendency towards a population increase. French Bulldogs are coming back to the canine scene.
