French Bulldogs descended from English Bulldogs, and initially they presented nothing else but a smaller replica of the English Bulldog. These miniature creatures were imported from Great Britain in the 1860s, and were admired by French streetwalkers. Shortly after the importation, they were bred to French Terriers.
